Pig Hunting
Hawaiian Style
by J. W.
It was still dark when we started our descent into the lush Hawaiian valley. We could smell the aroma of wet vegetation wafting up from below. The rains from the night before had made the going treacherous, but we only had one thing on our minds.......the PIG!!!! We reached the valley floor just as the sky opened up with a tremendous downpour from the ominous storm clouds, which had formed over the formidable Koolau mountain range. Our plan of attack was to travel upwind, which meant dealing with the raging rain swollen stream. The rocks were extremely slippery and the weight of our backpacks severely slowed our progress. We knew we had to reach the large grove of mountain apple trees that lay approximately 10,000 meters upstream before dawn. If this goal was not accomplished we would lose our chance to surprise our extremely keen witted and crafty quarry.......the Pig!!!! We forged ahead never once thinking of giving in to the blinding rain and overgrown elephant grass that grew along the banks of the rushing stream. Our faces and arms were covered with blood from hacking at the razor sharp grass that blocked us from our goal.....the PIG!!!! We reached the mountain apple grove before dawn. It was critical to our plan to be in position before daylight could reveal us to our objective.....the PIG!!!!.
We positioned ourselves up the mountain, where the jungle bordered the mountain apple grove. The plan required us to be 35 1/2 meters apart, no more, no less!. It was imperative that we were that exact distant apart to accomplish our mission.....the PIG!!!!
We were set......the waiting began.
We heard the sharp snapping sound of branches breaking in the small guava tree patch directly in front of our positions. The movement below us stopped and the jungle became deathly silent............the PIG..............had arrived! The air became thick with the dank, dusky odor of the ferocious beast.
We couldn't see him............but we knew....................he was very close!!
Without warning, I heard the shrill sound of a telephone ringing, it was so close I could feel it!!!! The mist cleared before my eyes and I found myself standing in my kitchen. HELLO! Wake Up!!!!
It was Michaels wife calling to let me know he had just shot............the PIG!
The Pig that had been eating all the avacados in his backyard.
Good story yeah?? :)
